On the left, you can see the seat, fully inflated, with the container it comes in. On the right, you can see the size it folds up to, as compared to my son’s backpack on wheels.

As your child grows bigger, you slowly begin to slough off all the accoutrements of babydom: the play gym, the jumperoo, the Bumbo, the high chair, the bouncer, the Exersaucer (whew! That’s a lot of stuff!) One of the items that stays with you the longest is a car seat.

If you have an elementary school-aged child, chances are you have a booster seat. So, what happens when you travel? If you aren’t lucky enough to have a car seat at your destination, you need to take one along.

We have been lucky enough to not need to travel with a car seat, since, for the most part, we travel to visit my in-laws, who have a booster my six-year-old son can ride in. But, we are heading to Disney in Florida, so we had to consider what to do. My husband pointed out that state law does not require a child of our son’s age and size to ride in a booster, but I know we have a drive from our vacation rental to the parks each day and would feel much more comfortable knowing our son is safe. Renting a booster from the car rental company seems a little silly, since boosters are so inexpensive, yet lugging one in the airport on top of all the other things to remember (and we only have one child) seems like a recipe for losing or forgetting it.

I mentioned my quandry to Catherine here at LiveMom, who mentioned she was just sent a BubbleBum to test out. The Bubble Bum is an inflatable (yes, you read that right) booster which deflates and fits into a soft bag about the size of a one liter bottle. I was thrilled to have a solution which made it easier for us to keep our son safe.

The seat was extremely easy to inflate and in fact it took only a minute or so to inflate. When you think of something inflatable, you might think it’s flimsy, but in fact the BubbleBum is very sturdy.

When we packed up to head to the Magic Kingdom, we tried it out:

He did in fact have his seat belt on after this photo was taken.

What do you think? We think it’s a great solution for traveling families.

Would you like to try one out for yourself? It’s perfect timing as spring break and summer vacation are mere months away!
